Artist Carrol Boyes speaks about her work
From my studio… into your home
I started my company, Carrol Boyes Functional Art in South Africa in 1989 with the intention of bringing aesthetically pleasing, usable sculptures into the home to use everyday. The present range consists of a selection of flatware, silverware and house wares, plus many items designed for specific uses. All these products are available in both traditional and contemporary designs and are manufactured using the finest quality stainless steel and lead-free pewter.
The designs start with my sketches. The designs are organic, often figurative and fluid: fish and the female figure are recurrent images, among undulating swirls of metal you'll wonder how something usually thought of as cold can be so sensuous. Some pieces are large and chunky, others delicately formed.
The pieces are all manufactured in my studio in South Africa. The studio consists of a number of talented craftspeople who lovingly file, grind and polish each piece to be the high quality finish which is associated with all of Carrol Boyes' Functional Art. This process guarantees each piece is unique, imbued with the eccentricities and distinctive qualities only achieved by hand finishing. Even though no two pieces are identical, each item has to pass five quality checks before it meets my exacting standards and is allowed to leave the studio.
My greatest joy is in seeing the delight, amusement and pleasure my work will bring to you. You'll see that these pieces of Functional Art will make even the ordinary task an adventure.
Fondly,
Carrol Boyes |
