ClaremontHandmade Paper
The Pitzer Paper Project (P3) was formed as an alliance between Bella Cosa and Pitzer College as a way to help fund on-going projects in Nepal.
Pitzer faculty, staff, students and their families have joined forces with Bella Cosa staff to locate, import and sell high quality products from the Himalayas. Our goal is to find beautiful products that are made by artists and companies concerned with the environment and with the working conditions of those creating the items, and to make these products available locally.
Pitzer College is an undergraduate school with an emphasis on the social sciences, and is one of the Claremont Colleges. Bella Cosa is Claremont's source for unique functional art, and is co-owned and operated by Kristine Hartouni and Judy Fortson.
Nepal
The handmade paper in this product is made from the bark of the Danphne Cannabina or Danphne Papysacea, which grows in the Mt. Everest region of Nepal. Known locally as "Lokta", the shrub grows at an altitude of 6500-9500 feet. Lokta regenerates after cutting, thus preserving the fragile forest ecology of Nepal.
By purchasing this product, you provide valuable economic support for Pitzer's Health & Hospitality Program which helps Nepali villagers in need of healthcare navigate the medical maze of the 20th century. In addition, funds go to help improve the socioeconomic conditions of Nepali women and girls, particularly a project that fights the sexual trafficking of young girls. Finally, your pruchase also helps preserve the ancient traditional handicrafts of the region.
